Dog Walks (within human walking distance of  the flat)

We are lucky enough to have two small enclosed spaces where you can let your dog out. No need to watch them, they will be safe to sniff and get fresh air. But not enough to exercise them.

Instead I will show you two excellent locations where they can run their paws off!

Forest Run

Walk 1. The Quarry Park

Welcome to Shrewsbury, where you and your furry friend can enjoy the perfect dog-walking adventure at The Quarry, a stunning 29-acre park right in the heart of town. Just a 5-minute stroll from your flat over the footbridge next to the charming Boathouse Pub, this lush green space along the River Severn is a haven for dogs and their owners. Here’s why The Quarry is the ultimate spot for your canine companion to explore, play, and unwind.

How to get there

Map to the Quarry, Shrewsbury

Walk out of Breidden View, and turn left. Stay on the left footpath as you walk towards the Bricklayers Arms Public House. Walk passed the pub, which will be on your right, on the otherside of the road. As you near the road junction, turn left into Pengwern Road. Follow this road round to the left and slightly downhill. After 3/4 minutes you will find yourself at a T-junction with Porthill Road.

Look across the road and to the left, and you will see a public house called the Boathouse. Walk towards this pub, and just before you get there, you will see a footbridge that crosses over the river. Here you have two options, cross it and enter the Quarry Park, or stay on this side of the bridge, but turn to your right, walk through a gate and follow the footpath along the river, this is open to the public.

Why The Quarry is Perfect for Dogs

  • Spacious and Scenic: With wide-open grassy areas, tree-lined paths, and a beautiful riverside setting, The Quarry offers plenty of room for your dog to roam, sniff, and stretch their legs. The iconic lime tree avenue is perfect for a leisurely walk while soaking in Shrewsbury’s charm.

  • Dog-Friendly Environment: Dogs are welcome throughout most of the park, making it a fantastic place for them to socialise and enjoy some freedom. The open spaces are ideal for a game of fetch or a run-around, with plenty of benches for you to relax while they play.

  • Riverside Fun: The River Severn runs alongside The Quarry, the scenic riverside paths are great for a gentle stroll with your dog by your side.

Highlights for Dog Walkers

  • The Dingle: This sunken garden is a visual treat with vibrant flowerbeds and a tranquil pond. While dogs need to be kept on a lead here, especially during busy periods it’s a lovely spot for a calm walk and some photo ops with your pup.

  • Hercules Statue and Beyond: Start your walk near the iconic Hercules statue, a short jaunt from the footbridge, and explore the park’s winding paths. The mix of open fields and shaded areas keeps things interesting for both you and your dog.

Walk 2. Doctor's Field

This is a quieter and relatively unknown area, but no less stunning than the Quarry. Here the fields and walk follow the river along a footpath known as the Shropshire Way. This route takes you into town, or back via a circular route to the flat.

Doctor’s Field is a natural, undeveloped site, which adds to its charm but requires some care. The riverside path is generally accessible, but wet conditions can make the grassland soggy. There is a set of steps leading down to the field, whilst not onerous some may find the undulating terrain challenging.

Exit Breidden View, and turn left. Walk towards the Bricklayers Arms public house. Cross the road towards the pub and walk into Hafren Road passing the pub keeping it on your righthandside. The pub is two minutes walk from the flat.

Keep walking along Hafren Road until you reach the T- junction with a main road. This road is called The Mount. Turn right here, but cross to the otherside of the road, after about 50 yards, you will see a sign at the end of a short row of terraced cottages, this sign point down to the river and says Public Footpath. Walk down the steps and enjoy turning right or left along the river.

Highlights for Dog Walkers

  • Historical Charm: Doctor’s Field was once part of the Darwin family estate at The Mount, where a young Charles Darwin, born in 1809, nurtured his love for nature. Walking here, you’re following in the footsteps of the famous naturalist, whose childhood home is visible from parts of the field in winter. It’s a unique blend of history and nature for you and your dog to enjoy.

  • Riverside Paths: Start your walk along the main riverside path, which is generally dry when the river is low, offering stunning views across to the West Midlands Showground. The path is perfect for a leisurely stroll or an energetic run with your dog.

  • Nature Exploration: The mix of damp grassland and scrub is great for dogs who love to explore varied terrain.

  • Circular Route: If you turn right upon entering the field, you will follow the generaal direction of the town centre. It will bring you out into a residential area known as Frankwell. Franwell is the big roundabout at the bottom of the hill near the flat. Walk up this hill and you will find the flat on your left. This circular route can take 20-40 mins

  • Wildlife and Nature: Here you can embark on a delightful walking adventure at Doctor’s Field, a serene countryside site at the back of The Mount, just a 5/10-minute stroll from our flat. Nestled along the River Severn, this 2.9-hectare floodplain offers a peaceful and natural setting perfect for dogs to explore. With its rich history tied to Charles Darwin and its open, dog-friendly spaces.

  • The Shropshire Way: Doctor’s Field is a hidden gem for dog owners staying at our flat, offering a peaceful escape just over 5 minutes away along a path known as the Shopshire Way. It's natural beauty, historical significance, and dog-friendly open spaces make it a lovely visit. The path is maintained by the Shropshire Way Association, a charity ensuring its upkeep through donations.
