Our Town
We have a beautiful town to walk around, with traffic limited in the centre on the weekend. The town itself has lovely small alleys known as Shutts with lots of independent shops and cafes. If you get a chance, take a look inside our library on Castle Street. The centre is within the river, it is known locally as a the river loop. Also within this loop is a lovely green area known as the Quarry Park. There is a very tranquil fountain and planted garden within the Quarry called the Dingle, well worth a visit during the summer.
The town has boat trips available March - October, The Sabrina Boat. Shrewsbury is full of pubs and restaurants. Below are just a few that are relatively close to the flat.
Pubs and Restaurants
The Pub known as the Brick is your closest, walk out of the lane and turn left, walk for 2 minutes and it’s there on your right. It’s very popular and serves Green Monkey lager which is very reasonably priced. For a local, it’s a very nice pub.
If you were to keep walking passed the Brick on the main road, after 10/15 minutes you would reach The Beacon. This is also a well known local pub, serves good value pub food and has a nice friendly atmosphere. Quiz night on a Sunday.
The Boathouse is only a 5-minute walk. If it’s warm and sunny you must go there and sit outside by the river. In the Summer, this is the nicest pub in the county. Beautiful setting on the side of the River Severn. Walk out of the lane, turn left, and walk for 2 mins, then take the first left into Pengwern Road (opposite the Brick). Walk slightly downhill and round a small bend all the way to the end of the road, and at the T – junction, turn left again, walk for just a minute and the Boathouse is opposite you. Of interest is the bridge next to the pub. This is a footbridge and is a short cut into town. This route will take you through the Quarry Park.
The Armoury is a fantastic place to eat and is big enough to host large family groups. Again this is in walking distance. Walk over the footbridge alongside the Boathouse pub, and at the end of the bridge turn left, keeping the river to your left. After a few minutes you’ll find yourself alongside the Armoury, The Riverside Inn and Hickory’s.
We’ve mentioned a few pubs nearby where you can enjoy a few drinks and have a meal. Now let’s look at restaurants nearby. Leave the flat and lane, then turn right to go down the hill. This area is called Frankwell. There are nice local shops around the roundabout. Veg shops and a cafe. There is also a small general stores selling tobacco and alcohol called Everyman.
The area known as Frankwell is the vicinity at the bottom of our hill towards town. It is the whole area from the roundabout all the way to the river and the bridge into town, known as the Welsh Bridge. Cross over the bridge and you’ve left Franwell. Just off the roundabout on a road known as The Mount, is a great Asian fusion place to eat called The Yak and Yeti. There is also a Mediterranean restaurnt on the roundabout that is dog friendly, called Elcatala.
There is also the Majestic wine shop open to the public. Frankwell is a bustling area. Leave the car at the flat and walk this way into town, and return via the footbridge next to the Boat House, for a nice circular route.
Walking from Frankwell roundabout towards the Welsh Bridge you will find further pubs, a Kebab Takeaway, Tapas bar, Indian Restaurant and a Turkish Restaurant….all this before you’ve crossed the into the town centre. (We have two bridges in the town centre, the English Bridge leading to London, and the Welsh Bridge leading to north Wales.) Don’t forget to check out the current shows at the Severn Theatre. This is also in Frankwell.
The Indian Restaurant mentioned above, is called the Third Place. If you were to cross the bridge into town, there are also two others fairly close called The Curry House and the lovely Nepalese
Restaurant known as Avatar.
